What is Allergy Diagnostics and What are Different Types of Allergies?
The prevalence of allergic disorders is rising across the globe. Accurate identification of triggering or causative allergens is required for effective avoidance and environmental control of allergies. Several tests can be conducted to determine what type of substance is causing an allergic reaction.
It can be a sudden bout of sneezing or skin rash; allergies often arise suddenly. For someone to even suspect they could be allergic to something, they must keep track of their symptoms, how frequently these symptoms occur, and if anything tends to set them off. Being aware of such occurrences is crucial so that you may contact your doctor and allow him to diagnose your allergy. To determine which compounds are causing your allergy symptoms, an allergy diagnostic is performed.
What is Allergy Diagnostic?
An allergy is medically described as a disorder of systemic sensitivity. A skilled allergy specialist will use an allergy diagnostic test to see if the patient has any known chemical allergies. Allergy is typically detected by a biopsy or a diagnostic test. You can also adopt an elimination diet to obtain this. Thus, the heavy economic burden and increased occurrence of allergic diseases are expected to boost the growth of the global allergy diagnostic market.
What are the Types of Allergies?
- Anaphylaxis
A severe and potentially dangerous allergic reaction. It might happen within seconds or minutes of being exposed to something to which a person is allergic.
- Hay Fever
It can be occupational, seasonal, or perennial (year-long). Also called allergic rhinitis, it results in nasal irritation or inflammation.
- Atopic Dermatitis
A disorder that makes our skin itch and turn red. Children are most frequently affected, however, anyone can have it at any age. It is a long-term disease that occasionally flares up and may also be characterized by hay fever or asthma.
- Food Allergies
Immune response activation after consuming a certain food that causes allergy symptoms.
- Allergic Asthma
Asthma is triggered by an allergic reaction, often known as allergy-induced asthma.
Different Diagnostic Tests for Allergies
- Skin Tests
Skin tests detect the presence of IgE (Immunoglobulin E) antibodies to allergens including pollen, food, or animal dander. The allergen is applied topically in a very small amount. The area is then scratched or poked. After about 15 minutes, a tiny raised bump that resembles a mosquito bite occurs if you are allergic to the allergen. Multiple allergy tests can be run simultaneously. An allergist can also perform an intradermal test. In this test, a tiny amount of the allergen is injected just beneath the skin.
- Challenge Test
An allergist is always around to supervise this test. A very small amount of an allergen enters your body through food or breathing. You are then carefully examined for an allergic reaction. Usually, challenge testing is performed to test for food or medication allergies when an allergist believes you have a low risk for a reaction.
- Blood Tests
IgE antibodies to specific allergens are measured in blood during allergy blood testing. RAST (Radio Allegro Sorbent Test) is the most popular type of testing. Another option is a blood test known as an ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). When skin testing cannot be performed, blood tests may be employed. For example, if you have specific skin disorders or a very frequent and serious allergic reaction, you might have a blood test. A positive blood sample does not always indicate that you are allergic to a certain substance. These tests are more expensive than skin testing and take longer to produce results.
The Bottom Line
Diagnostic procedures continue to be a crucial tool for assessing allergic patients. In order to prevent allergies from becoming more severe, it is important to treat them earlier. Hence, it is ideal to consult a skilled allergy diagnostic, if you even have the least idea that you might be experiencing an allergic reaction.
