Radon is a natural radioactive gas which is colorless and odorless in nature. It is formed from the breakdown of radioactive elements such as uranium and thorium in rocks and soil. These gases move up through the soil to the surface, where it can enter homes, schools and the workplace through cracks and other holes in the foundation. In some cases, radon can enter the buildings through well water and from the building materials. In fact, radon is particularly common in regions with soil containing granite and slate, which have certain concentration of uranium as well. According to the world health organization (WHO), it has been stated that contact with radon is the second most common reason for lung cancer next to smoking cigarettes and is considered to be the primary cause of lung cancer with the person who hasn’t smoked cigarettes in their lifetime. Radon gas is a radioactive gas which is generated through the breakdown of uranium inside the earth with no immediate health issues but in the long run it can cause a huge impact on the lungs.
The increasing demand for environment safety by formulating and implementing various government initiatives is considered to be the major driving factor for the radon air sensor market. Excessive pollution has become a global issue. The government has been taking initiatives with various environmental protection laws. Government is also launching various rules and regulations at all the levels by paying more attention on the environmental issues within their area by investing more in monitoring the environmental pollution issues; these factors are predicted to be the major driving factor for the market.
The time required to show initial measurements of radon with the use of sensors is different. Some detectors require lesser amount of time to detect radon but others require a much longer time to display the result. Some detectors can display the result within 48hrs but some take several months to display the result due to which it is considered to hamper the growth of the market. In addition, to time, some of the sensors also have limited range. Many detectors are restricted to a specific range. The presence of radon gas can be measured up to the specific range, beyond that, the sensor will display wrong numbers or might not detect radon which can be considered to be the biggest restraints for the growth of the radon gas sensor market.
Depending on the type the market is segmented into short term detectors, long term detectors and digital detectors. Short term detector is the quickest and cheaper way to monitor radon in a structure. The detector is placed in the area where it is tested. The test duration may vary from anywhere between 2 to 90 days as radon varies from day to day and season to season. Long term detectors are used to measure the presence of radon in the air over a period of time which exceeds more than 90 to 365 days. The results of long-term detectors are more accurate as they measure radon gas presence over a longer period of time. Digital detectors provide average or continuous measurement of radon that shows daily, weekly, short term and long-term averages through a display. These detectors are used for the long term and short term measurement purpose.
Depending on the end use, the market is segmented into industrial use and home use. Homes are vulnerable to a huge effect of radon gas as there are high chances of the gas entering through diffusion from the ground, gas applications water supplies, cracks in the solid floors, cracks in walls, gaps in suspended floors, and cavities inside the walls. There are also basements and crawl spaces under the houses that allow more opportunity for the entry of radon gas. As these are major concerns for home use end use, home use gas sensor segment is predicted to eventually increase the growth of the radon gas sensor market.
North America witnessed to have the highest radon gases. The geological composition of glacial tills and derived soil can closely compare with bedrock units which allows to release more amount of the radon in the North America region. Due to the release of more amount of radon the government is also taking several initiatives for the environmental hazards to control these radon gases; these factors are predicted give a huge boost to the radon gas sensor market in the forecast period.
The key players profiled in the radon gas senor market are Bertin Instruments, PRO-Lab, RADEX, RAdata, AirThings, Corentium Home Radon, Air Ae Ateward, FSPI, Airchek and Kidde among others.
